Fatima Tomaeva-Gabellini - Artist in Review

Thank you so much S Patton for finding the artist!

A while ago I posted this water color painting not knowing who the artist was - but thankfully one of the readers did!!!  It is truly lovely - isn't it!!

Well, now that I know the artist is Fatima Tomaeva-Gabellini, I was able to locate more of her work and a bit about her.

Osetinian artist Fatima Tomaeva-Gabellini was born on November 5, 1967 in the city of Vladikavkaz, Russia.
From 1986 to 1991 graduated from the Art School of Vladikavkaz, later she studied art in Italy.

Since 1998 she lives and works in Italy.

Multifaceted talent, ranging from fifteenth-century Russian Orthodox iconography to more modern shapes of the female body in the most diverse attitudes and plastic movements.
A vigorous and colourful brush stroke, which captures the delicacy as well as the balanced design of the anatomy of the body.

The artist positioning is to execute any mobile or static subject, which seems to fly freely in the space allotted in the canvas so as to evade impressive realism.

Misc. Items!

A while ago, I stored some sidesaddle information and pictures for later publishing by sending said information to myself in an e-mail.  Well - it is a mish-mash of pictures and information ... so instead of waiting to find a place to post it - I thought I would just show you some of it now.

Here is a modern piece of sidesaddle art I had never seen before by J. Jill:

Artist Joseph Kreutzinger 1757 - 1829 - painting of Marie Antoinette

I love this next painting - thanks to Jen - I now know that it is called Woman in a Riding Habit (L'Amazone) by Gustave Courbet

This last one is my favorite.  I could stare at this painting for hours.

Diana Vernon (from the novel 'Rob Roy', 1817) is shown as a heroine, wearing a ladies riding habit. The cousin of the novel's hero, Frank Osbaldistone, whom she eventually marries, Di Vernon is a beautiful, high-spirited, fox-hunting, horse-riding Amazon upon whom, she tells Frank, "compliments are entirely lost".
"I am a girl, and not a young fellow, and would be shut up in a madhouse if I did half the things I have a mind to…"
Her "frank and unreserved disposition" and "smooth brow", however, hide an "aching heart" and a set of Jacobite and Catholic intrigues - "such a series of nets, and toils, and entanglements, that I dare hardly speak a word for fear of consequences…" True to her nature, and unlike many of Scott's heroines, Di does actively participate in the adventures of the novel.

Sidesaddle Art

I just LOVE this watercolor painting...but I have not one clue about it.  I cannot really make out the artists signature and since I found it on Pintrest without any information other than under the topic of horse art, I cannot share much more than the painting itself with you...

Gibson Girls Go Sidesaddle

I believe this is probably the last fashion era of the sidesaddle before women started to change over to riding astride.  I have a print down in my tack room that is different from any of these which I adore.  I will post it if I can find the picture I took.

This print is really worth blowing up to see the details.  Gibson girls always have the most beautiful faces!

My Boy Equusport!!

I went to Baton Rouge today to see Sport...so since I am going to tell you all about him - I thought I would also share the finished portrait photo.  I cannot tell you how well Jeanne has captured Sport in this work of art.  See that look on his face?  He gives me 'that look' all the time!

I was a bit concerned about what I would see today.  It was the first time I was going to visit Sport since I moved him to Maranatha Farm.  I had spoken to his new trainer only on the phone at length once, about 1 week after his arrival.  The news then was worse than I had hoped.  I had hoped that Sport's vacation would have revived his enthusiasm and that he would again become the happy horse he once was.  That was not the case.  The first 3 days Tommy worked with Sport, he was at the pivotal point of either going down hill very quickly, or starting to turn back to the positive.  He was throwing his head, jumping off the rail, spooking at everything and anything and even trying to go up on Tommy.  He was so volitle that Tommy would not let anyone else attempt to ride him.

After that first conversation, I felt like I had been punched in the stomach.  I was so sad.  I knew we had to back up Sport's training, but it was then that I learned just how far back we needed to go.  Also per Tommy's request, I placed a standing order with Smart Pak to put Sport on a quieting compound to help him deal with the stress.  I told him to do whatever needed to be done.  This horse owns a part of my heart and I wanted what was best for him, even if that meant I would not get to show him this year at all.

We ended the phone conversation at that.  Now you know why I was nervous - this just being 3 weeks later.

When I got to the farm, I entered Sport's stall.  I whispered softly to him and scratched his neck.  I missed him so.  When Tommy arrived, he entered Sport's stall, said loudly, "Hey Buddy" as he slapped him on the back a few times.  Sports head went up, his ears were up and in every other way - he looked like he was smiling and very happy to see Tommy.  My heart jumped!

Tommy tacked him up and led him into the round pen.  He placed the reins over the back of the saddle and told me that he only does this on Monday's because Sunday is the day of rest for the horses.  Sport trotted around on the rail with perfect manners, first one direction and then the other.  Tommy walked him out and led him over to the mounting area.  He got on him and started to walk him around the arena.  The whole time  he was working him, he was telling me of what he discovered about Sport - what works and what does not, what was doing with Sport now and what his plans were for the future.  I so appreciated this.  Best of all, from the second he started to trot, Sports head was in a magnificent place, high with his chin dropped - and the best of the best.... Tommy only had a light hold on the reins!

It was so amazing I was jumping up and down (like a fool!) and I screamed "I love you Tommy!"  To me - he had already accomplished a miracle!!!  He continued to work Sport by trotting and cantering him in both directions.  I had to think back.  At the last horse show, it was decided not to show Sport in a canter class, because he was just too unpredictable and way too strong - especially for me.  I had to have a death grip on the curb rein on a training bridle to keep his head in a moderate position...no where near as nice as where he was carrying his head today.  I felt such a sigh of relief.... my boy was coming back.  He was bright.  He was happy and if all of that was not amazing enough, I rode him too ... all 3 gaits...and it was FABULOUS!!

So for now, my 5 gaited horse is just working on being content and happy doing 3 gaits.  He is still working in a training bridle, but will soon start again in a full bridle, and I am shelving the thought of riding him aside... at least for a while...but the key phrase here is that I now again have a "happy horse"!!!

More Horse Art...

Since we have been talking about Jeanne's painting of Sport, I thought this would be a great time to see some more art.

On a PURELY amateur side of things.... I used to enjoy drawing, and as far as pencil (or colored pencil) drawing was concerned, I was pretty good ... well - as long as I was drawing a horse!!!  Here is a horse I drew in my early 20's (a looooooong time ago)  I never learned how to paint.  This is the only one I have left as I gave away all my other drawings.
Tomorrow I will do a post on figurines, so I left that out today but wanted to share with you this magnificent piece of art in the form of a fountain!

..and here are a few interesting paintings I found recently with a sidesaddle theme to them!

Newest Updated Portrait Photo..

I wanted to share this one with you because the painting needs to dry a day or 2 before Jeanne starts with the next layer of details.  I am just giddy with excitement over this painting!!  As you can see, she made changes to the jacket.:

Worth the Wait!!!

About 2 years ago my sweet husband wanted to hire someone to paint me..."ON A HORSE???"  I replied as giddy as a school girl!  I am not sure if that is what he had in mind when he told me about it... but I railroaded him right into it anyway!  HA HA... the problem was finding an artist.  As you know .. because if you are reading this blog - I KNOW you are a horse person... it is WAY more important that the horse looks perfect than it is for me to look perfect!!!  ha ha .. Anyway, we searched ... and after a while - we kind of gave up.  I did not want it badly enough to just use anyone...

...but then along came Jeanne Newton Sshoborg, a renowned American Saddlebred artist.... and all of a sudden .. my portrait was back in the works!!!  Well Jeanne was so booked up, that even though we put in our request in mid December, she is just now getting started.  BUT - when she gets started ... she makes amazing progress!!  Here is the initial chalk drawing and the first 2 shots of the initial coat of paint.  She just got started and to me - it already looks breathtaking!!!

I can't get over how she has captured Sport.  The minute I saw this, I felt like I knew him!!!

Any Artist's Out There?

When I was a child, like many of you I imagine, I had horse fever!  Because of this I would check out every single horse related book in the library, fawn over the homeliest pasture pony as if he was worth a million dollars and by the time I was 10, I could draw a descent picture of a horse - WITH MY EYES CLOSED!  HA HA.. I'll bet you guys were the same way... and if your parents did not lean into your horse fever, it just made it that much worse for you!

I'll let you in on a secret... My Father had just 2 questions for me when he was very ill, and one of them was if there was anything he could have done to quell my horse fever!  We had a big laugh over that one.  I assured him that he was no match for the Lord... because it was a passion instilled into me from my creation and was a large part of who I was, stretching far beyond my time spent with horses.  It taught me compassion, dicipline, perserverence and more than anything - how to handle all those "nay-sayers" in your life who constantly drone to you all the reasons you can't do something.

Okay - back on track to what this post is really about - Art.  In my high school years, I took a couple of art classes and was better than I thought I would be....but still, all I wanted to draw was horses!  Who would have thought!!  I did not persue that interest... so when I see artists like Jeanne, who is doing the painting for us of Sport ... or the amazing painting I am going to post below, I think that maybe sometime in the future, I would enjoy persuing that interest again.  I only learned how to draw, never experienced painting of any kind.

This painting makes me want to learn!!

When I Was A Child...

..my Mother and Grand Mother taught me how to sew, both sewing garments and creative stitchery.  I never did reach the level of coutour sewing that they did..but have a deep appreciation for it.  That is why when I see hand made items for sale, I have to stop and look....

Here is a beautiful cross stitch...

..and look at this needle point pillow!

I would not be unhappy if either of these things was under my Christmas tree!

Oh The Tables You Could Dress With These!

While I am not a typical fan of placemats, these 3 did catch my eye!

Oh what an elegant place card for an elegant table!
Pull your linen napkin from this...

..sip expresso or tea from these..

...and select a sweet treat from this...

....sigh....

I just love artistic things that lean into my passion for horses!

Ladies in Red!

So many wonderful pieces of art depicting sidesaddle scenes, have the ladies wearing something red.  I believe I know why... is there a more striking color?  Here are just a few examples for you to drool over:

I could stare at this for hours!

I wish this needlepoint pillow was mine!

 These are show posters.

I know I have posted this beautiful garment before.. but it commands a second look... maybe a 3rd!

..and look how elegant this goofy girl looks in red!...but that horse would make anyone look amazing!
This is the famous Stubbs painting Jen mentioned in the comments!
