Modern Reproductions!

I thought I would leave you with a LOT of eye candy..since I have to leave again to cover another horse show. I will not be back until next week.

Not sure what era this is from...but YOWZA - is this not too cute?!

I wish I could have seen more pictures of this suit. Do you see the tassel? This is just too elegant!

This looks like a modern outfit to me...and yet it is still so pretty in the sidesaddle!

A little more historic..

A lot more historic...

Umm - although I think this is adorable, I think there must be a jacket that goes with it.

An Amazing Gift!

Last Thursday I got home from work to find a package waiting for me at the barn door. I am waiting on a few things that are on back order...like my girth!..so I did not think much about it. I scooped up the box and took it upstairs with me. Once I settled in and had a chance to look closer, I realized it was something different...something special! ..and this is what I found when I opened my gift!

Pam is a very special person in my life. Even though we have never met in person I really feel like I know her. You see, not only was she more than willing to share her sidesaddle riding experience, advice and suggestions with me..but we each lost horses that were very special to us at the same time. What are the 2 things that she sent me? Well, one is a girth extender that she used to use with her horse, given to me I am sure because I could not find a girth quite long enough and the other gift is a rare and unique antique sidesaddle stirrup! This Victorian era stirrup is hand made entirely of leather over a metal frame. It is classically tiny. I thought about taking a picture of my foot next to it...but did not want to embarrass myself! Pam, you were right when you said it would start a new collection for me! I will cherish it forever!!!

What's in Your Flask?

A proper lady would either have tea or Sherry in hers! Here is an assortment of flasks, some specifically for men, but all beautiful and unique.

None of these would be proper in a sidesaddle appointment class..

..but still fun to explore.

Meet Jessica Connors..

Jessica lives in the Northeast, so she was lucky enough to be able to attend the ISSO Annual Meeting & Clinic which was held on March 28 and 29, 2009 in North East, MD. The clinic was held at Fairwinds Farm in Cecil County and Jessica was nice enough to share not only her first time riding experience with us, but also some pictures!

She rode her own horse, Queaka, who is affectionately known as Squeaky. Squeaky is a 19 yr old Thoroughbred and although Jessica did bring her own sidesaddle, it was determined that something needed to be fixed so that it was a better fit for her. In these photos, she is using one of the instructors saddles.

This all day event was not only a riders clinic taught by Jeanie Whithed & Heidi Opdyke but also an instructors clinic."It was very cold and rainy all day, but I had so much fun! I did all 3 gaites. We learned so much, especially from Linda Flemmer, who gave a presentation about the sidesaddles." Being nosey, I had to ask what the cost was....only $40.00! Jessica also commented on how many saddles they had there for sale, "15 or 20!"

More and More Delay's

First due to no equipment...so I bought a sidesaddle.

Next due to the horse refusing to get into the trailer...so I worked on that.

Then due to wrong sized equipment...so I ordered the girths, straps etc.

Then due to ex-long girth being on back order...waiting waiting waiting..

Trainer said she thought she had something that we could use with extenders that would work until my girth came in...and we were rained out this weekend.

Next weekend - she has a show...and the weekend after that - I have to go to Dallas to cover a show for Saddle and Bridle magazine!

When - oh when will I get to take my first sidesaddle lesson???? :0(

1807 Riding Habit

The following information was given to me by another sidesaddle fan and one of my blog followers sunvalleysally:
"There is a sort of garter on this dress but it is intended as a modesty strap (to keep skirts from flying around too much) not as anything to make the rider more comfortable or safe. In that era many ladies rode with a groom who often led the horse and the riding apparel was more a fashion statement than anything else."

To Be Continued...

next week! I have to go to Oklahoma City for almost a week to cover the Oklahoma Centennial Horse show for Saddle and Bridle Magazine. It is one of my favorite shows, but I cannot take along my lap top this time.

See you next week! Maybe by then my equipment will be here and I can finally take my first lesson aside!

Still Collecting Tack!

Okay - when I first started to research sidesaddle equipment, I thought I needed the same tack as a hunt seat aside rider would need. Thank God I did not buy that $100.00 Fitzwilliam girth, because since I will be competing against saddleseat riders, I found out I must use this girth instead!

I needed a 56" girth for my big boy and the longest they came in was 54, so I had to buy girth extenders.

I was allowed to opt for all black or all white items. That was a hard choice but in the end I decided on black, thinking it would blend in better. White just seemed to 'stand-out-ish" I am still not sure I made the right choice...but brown was not an option for the girth. I also purchased a black whip and will have my saddle repair guy sew a triangular piece of leather on the end of it.I also bought a black dressage saddle pad...hoping it will also help everything blend in. My saddle is dark brown and my riding habits will likely all be dark.
