I Bought These..

..as a part of my riding costume.

I do not jump and do not show sidesaddle hunt, so for me, the ankle boots are much more comfortable to use. I have some nice brown jod boots, but my black riding boots are very worn out. I found these on E-bay for $7.50 + shipping. They are actually made by Brighton and the buttons are sterling silver. Won't they be cute peeking out from under my skirt!

Woo Hoo!

Took my first riding lesson this weekend ...well actually I took 2 lessons (one on Saturday and another on Sunday) The first lesson was astride. The second was aside. I am thrilled to report that I felt NO pain what-so-ever! It has only been 7weeks since my total abdominal hysterectomy...so that was a concern.

I felt timid posting the trot ...which has always been the hardest thing for me to master (well I am FAR from mastering it!) ..but as the lesson went forward and I relaxed, it was easier....NOT easy..but easier!

My newly restored sidesaddle is a dream. It now sits flatter on my horses back. Before it was a bit uphill, making the posted trot that much more difficult.

2 weeks and counting until my very first show!!!!

Got My Tail Switch..

..back and I am thrilled with it. I hung it from my refrigerator so you can see how long and thick it is. It is a bit over 5 feet long!

You can also see how it is sewn on the underside. Now I can tie it onto a horses tail bone using the shoe lace tie.Ivan's old tail will help make my other show horses a little bit more beautiful!

Big News!

NTASHA - North Texas American Saddle Horse Association. This will be my very first show. OMG - it is only 2 1/2 weeks away too!!! I am sure you are wondering why I chose it, especially since it is so soon. Well, first of all it is a non-rated schooling show. Although in the Saddlebred world that does not mean that there will not be some excellent show horses there...because there will be! But still, it is smaller, located in a wonderful arena just North of Dallas called Las Colinas and I want to get as many non-rated shows under my belt before Spring which is when the bigger rated shows begin.

YIKES!!!

Ribbon Rack

I want to make one of these! It is hard to tell by this picture, but there is a smaller piece of wood raised with an opening behind it so you can just hang the ribbons easily. Not that I am expecting to take many (if any at all) ribbons home with me...but it still looks very very nice!

I'm Back!

I have been away covering a horse show in Dallas and I just got back yesterday. Today is my first day back to work at my 'normal' Monday - Friday job...so my sidesaddle posts should get more regular.

I Think I Could Start Another Blog...

on art only involving sidesaddle! How amazing are these paintings???

If I did not have so much money flying out of my hands trying to get ready for show season, I would have outbid anyone to get these....not that I have one square inch of wall space left to hang them!

Tail Switch

As I prepare to go back into the show ring, I am gathering many things I need. I want to be prepared, because it is important to me to make a good impression since I will be the only rider riding aside. This is the horse I am going to start with:
His registered name is Heaven and Earth and let me say - it fits him. He is an ANGEL!! His barn name is Oliver...but Oliver does not have a good hair gene! Most Saddlebreds do have great hair - able to grow tails that drag the ground for miles if the owner takes good care of them. Oliver however, just cannot seem to grow a long mane or tail..so we are going to give him a bit of help!

I used to own a gelding named Ivan. Here is a picture of him when he was just 3 or 4 with my friend Janie riding.
Ivan was a wonderful teacher and a fun show horse for me...but Ivan foundered. I have been through that before with another horse and Ivan did survive his incident, but when it happened, I knew he was going to be out of the show ring for at least a year and maybe much longer. I loved Ivan and did not care if I could never show him again...and I nursed him back to health. I decided though to cut off his long tail since he was going to be turned out into the pasture for so long. At the time I cut it, his tail drug the ground about 12 inches.

As it turns out, Ivan's tail is a close enough match to Oliver's that I can tie it in for horse shows. In order to do that though, the hair must be sewn together into a 'switch'. That way it will last a very long time. I am sending it off today to a man who I have heard from many people - does an exceptional job. It will cost me $100.00. If I was in the market to buy a switch and I did not own the horse hair, it could cost me $1000.00 depending on the length of the hair!!!!

If anyone is interested, the guy who is making the switch for me is:

Horse Cookies!

Ever get this response from your horse?

Never Again...IF you show up with a few of these in your pocket!

Horse Cookies

1 cup of oatmeal
1 cup of flour
1 cup of shredded carrots
1 teaspoon salt
1 tablespoon of sugar
2 tablespoons of vegetable
1/4 cup of molasses
1/4 cup of water

Mix ingredients as listed. Roll into 1 1/2 inch balls and place on cookie sheet. Bake at 350 degrees for 15 minutes or until golden brown. I usually double or triple this recipe...but then we have 8 horses on the farm right now!

Okay - I admit it...I will even eat these cookies!!!

Attn: Phaedra

I just wanted to point out something to this reader. Old sidesaddles are usually quite narrow because that was the typical body type of the Victorian era horse. Newer sidesaddles however are designed for wider bodied horses - all the way up to drafty's! Do not give up on your dream just because you have a larger breed horse. I have found quite a few pictures of ladies riding draft horses and other large breeds.

Go to my sidebar where I have internet stores and sights listed. A couple of them are very reputable sidesaddle dealers and I know one specializes in Elodian sidesaddles - (Hundred Oaks) which are the ones made for larger breeds!
