The drawing seems to show how someone with a left leg dismemberment could ride, while the photos show an idea for someone with a right leg disability.

That's the work of Eva Christy. She was hired to teach amputees from WWI to ride again, and was one of the first proponants of the sidesaddle for such a use. She was also the designer of the cage style safety stirrup.

I was just watching Princess Diaries 2 and was wondering the same thing!!
Always wondered about that! Because a fake leg would give a rider the appearance of having three legs, would it not?
