This is obviously an antique slipper stirrup. After the footrest, this is the most primitive stirrup design. What it totally lacked in safety.. it made up for in beauty. The only problem with that is like comparing apples to oranges!
This is a Lennans Pattern combination safety and slipper stirrup.
It is made of stainless steel.
Here is a more modern version of the Lennans safety stirrup where they are moving away from the slipper.
Look at this one made by Copes.
This is an older model made by Whitman. It has 2 separate parts that break away in the case of a fall.
..and here we have the modern day safety stirrup!
