More Historic Pictures..

Sidesaddle Jumping pictures!!!

This is a lady named Mabel Tompkins. Sadly, I have not been able to find anything else out about her.

Most of you know Esther Stace with her Guinness World Record sidesaddle jump of 6'6"

POOR horses! George Morris would have a cow! If you can't get out of their mouths, for god's sake please don't jump that high (or at all). Sheesh!

These pictures really are worth a million! I wish I could have had one to prep my focus on "all will go well" just before my girls used to enter a class with a horse that was too fresh or a ME that was too nervous for them! After seeing this woman jumping what was I worried about!

Wow, the lady in the last pic looks like she is about to fly off that horse. They all look a bit akward to me, but I have never really seen a lot of side saddle jumping.

Rachel it might look like they're jamming them in the mouth but I think it's more of an "auto-release" where a bit of contact is maintained over the fence. I've only jumped little stuff sidesaddle but it's nearly impossible to get as forward as you would in an astride saddle and give a huge release.
BTW The pictures are probably 80+ years old.

LoL I'd be interested to see what George Moris would say too! I bet it wouldn't be what you'd expect!

With that last picture of the woman "floating" astride for the 6'6 jump, my skirt would have to be either a) be permanently retired; or b) cleaned thoroughly....

PS to the other H/J'ers posting here ~ George would probably quote Vlad Littauer, mention how the use of Fred Caprilli's forward seat came into play, then yell/insult you for being too heavy handed, jumping ahead, bad braid job, gripping with your knees etc. (pick your vice!)then tell you to lose 10 pounds for your own good/for your horse even though your doctor tells you you are underweight... :D I also agree on the auto release - notice ears forward on those guys, not much "worry" going on there...

Gowest you crack me up! That is hilarious! I agree, I think I'd have to have my habit cleaned after such a huge jump! LOL

Perhaps we should send a pic of someone jumping sidesaddle into George Morris and see what he says?? lol

For those of you who commented that you can't have a proper release and get as good of a two-point as you can while riding astride, check out these photos...I would say these riders are doing a pretty good job!

It looks like it would be a little harder because your body has to essentially fold over your leg but clearly it can be done with style!

OK that's crazy! I can't jump over a foot-high jump in a regular saddle!

whoa! How do you actually hold on and not hit the horses back on the landing? Wow. Now that is balance...
