Which corset is the antique corset?
Take your time and look at each picture..
Look at the details....
Look at the colors....
Look at the hardware of the garment...
..and tell me which one of these corsets was made in 1890.
I'll tell you the answer tomorrow!
Both???
ReplyDeletemy guess would be the second one... mostly because of the color and design.... ?
ReplyDeleteI know the red one (the bottom one) is an antique ones as I recognize the dress form that it is one from an antique clothing dealer I know.
ReplyDeleteThe top one, I would be VERY surprised to hear if it wasn't an antique corset as they did use that bright pink color and it is the correct shape for a c. 1897- 1901 corset. You also don't often see the busk hook sewn on the busk on modern reproductions (it's most often seen on antique corsets from France) and the gusseting and gores are correct for a turn of the century corset.
If it is a reproduction, it is made by someone who is very familiar with antique corsets and who has the correct training to reproduce something like one.
From personal experience, very few few corsetieres these days have the skills to make a corset on the same level as the ones made 100+ years ago.
If I were to hazard a guess, I would probably say if it was made today, then it was most likely made by my friend Melanie Talkington who owns Lace Embrace in Canada. She has the world's largest collection of antique corsets (she has bought some of mine from my own once-extensive-collection) and she is the only corset maker I know who has the knowledge and the skill to make a corset like that.
I would be interested to know who made it, IF it is a repro!:)
You know what Julie, after looking at it again closely, I think both are antique. I can tell by the wear patterns on the silk baby ribbon threaded through the lace slots at the top and the small wear patterns to the silk on the body of the corset. I would need to see the lining to be sure, but I am sure it is.
ReplyDeleteDid you see the antique corset I restored? My friend did a blog post about it :) http://pastperfectvintage.blogspot.co.uk/2012_02_01_archive.html
