A very old edition of book Black Beauty! Did you read it when you were a child? Do you remember Black and his best friend Ginger?

Thank you Shannon Granger for finding these beautiful pictures!

I love those pictures! I did read it when I was a kiddo. I had my mom's old copy from the 1960's and my grandma bought me a nice hardcover edition as well. I also had two different movies - how could you not love it? I always cry during the Ginger part :(.

Anyway, beautiful illustrations - I want!!

This was one of my all time favorite books as a child. Made me cry everytime.

I should read it now as an adult... wonder if it would have the same meaning.

Those picture plates are beautiful.

I've read Black Beuaty again as an adult and it's just a good as when I was a kid.
To this day, I'd like a dappled pony I could call Merrylegs. I did get a lovely old dappled shetland, but her name was already Jingles, which seemed to suit her. Then I got a black shetland named Cookie and that name suited her because she was a smart cookie. Then I got a welsh cob named Comanche. That was a good name for him when he belonged to some kids who could not handle him, but with me he was wonderful. Again, I thought could I call him Merrylegs? Nope, only Bombay fit him.
So I'm still looking for a pony I can name Merrylegs.

I read Black Beauty in third or fourth grade; it always stayed with me. When I was working draft horses, I was always careful to make sure the collars fit and to loosen the check rein so they could lower their heads to pull. The bearing rein incident with Ginger made such an impression on me!!

My daughter named her colt foal Welsh Beauty ~ he's brown! We had a Black Beauty & a Blue Beauty who were pedigree Cochins. Blue died in my daughter's arms (after throwing up over me!) after a mink attack.
